FAQs
Q: When are the IB Assessments?
A: IB assessments happen over the course of your one or two-year course. Each teacher will set the dates and times of their Internal Assessments. External Assessments happen in May.
Q: What is an Internal Assessment?
A: Each subject area has Internal Assessments (IAs). These IAs are required by the IB and administered and assessed by your teacher. Scores and samples are sent to the IB for moderation.
Q: What is an External Assessment?
A: There are two kinds of External Assessments. Classes like English HL, Film HL and Theatre SL/HL require work to be completed under the supervision of the teacher. These assessments are then sent to the IB to be graded by examiners. All courses (except Film & Theatre) will sit for IB Exams in May at the end of the course. These assessments are proctored by teachers and sent to the IB for grading.
Q: What exams do I register for?
A: Juniors, you may register for your SL courses (with the exception of Spanish and Chinese). Seniors, you must register for all IB courses you are taking/finishing this year.
Q: How are the IB exams graded?
A: After an exam session, all exams are immediately sent to the IB, then scanned and sent to examiners all around the world. This system of examination allows students to be assessed against the criteria and removes bias from grading. All examiners are trained and their grading is checked by a double-blind system throughout the grading process. Once all exams are graded, a subject-area team meets in Cardiff, Wales at the IB assessment office to review the results. During this critical meeting, questions are reviewed and input from teachers regarding the exams is examined. This meeting then determines the mark bands for the 1-7 scoring.
Q: What about IB and College Credit?
A: Every college/university differs on acceptance of IB credit. Students and guardians are encouraged to explore potential college/university websites to see what courses and scores are eligible for types of credit.
